This is a problem because the DL people do not understand the immigration law. I was in a similar situation 2 years ago in Iowa. Tried to explain to the manager of the office, but got a lecture on how good their public transport system is. Then I went to another DL office in a rural county. The counter clerk refused, asked to see the supervisor who agreed to extend for 6 months by which time my extension came through.

Days when President started talking about fighting to make sure the immigration bill be passed, I felt even people who are here legally should get a fair chance. Not that it is a competetion for immigration, but its playing a fair game.
The immigration bill if passed, will come and stop at the same place where everyone of us are in now or even worse and pulls the whole system down.
I'm glad to see such a thing like immigration voice. This will make the law makers think with a broader mind.

I wouldn�t care about the nay Sayers about the Spelling bee...Yes, its lot more than that. Its the foundation and words do have power. You are basically training your brain for more logical thinking. These people are just jealous and making mockery of it. I challenge them to achieve the same...:D
snathan, dig up the history of these winers and lets see what they have accomplished or contributed to this world. Being the first would indicate that person (according to your definition of power) would be extrememly powerful, right? Now ask them to pen an essay on any issue and lets compare that to another class topper who just exels in creative thinking. Or lets just give these two candidates a project to work on and lets see who comes up with better ideas or greater problem solving skills. I personally know a kid who did not make it to the final round but just fell short (this year) and honestly I can tell you that the only skill (yes, the only skill) she has is this one. She is not involved in music lessons, does not participate in science olympiad, advance math or anything of that sort. Now I have to admit that this is the only one candidate I know personally for this year. Let me be honest from the depth of my heart that there is no issue of jealousiness or envy here. This is just a frank opinion and as we have already seen, there are an equal number of people who dont think this is a competition that is to be given the importance it is being given.

As I mentioned in my post, I had a resident Indian A/C - account that was opened when I was legally a resident Indian (salary a/c incidentally). No way it can be confused with one of N/RE/O accounts. I had INR in my account. It was wired over to my account here in the US, I got $s. Simple. If you look through the link that I posted, ICICI's instructions are quite clear - you can say family maintenance as a good reason.
As a couple of people commented in subsequent posts, it is straightforward to send money, INR to $.
Can the wire transfer be requested online using ICICI's(or HDFC's) website ? Or do you need personnally do it from India ?

I cant tell you how much i was moved by the momentum that got generated during the 'black' weekend before christmas. One can tell the excitement and enthusiasm among the sufferers in this community. I wholly appreciate the efforts taken in setting up this site and following up on the issues. We need to generate the same kind of membership as we saw during that weekend.
One question i have and many others like me would be interested in knowing is a clear description on how the money collected will be spent. I understand by reading your posts that it will be totally transparent and will be detailed out every week. But its more important for people to know before hand on how and why money is needed, before they can open up their purses generously. Also please take this question in a positive attitude as more people would know the actual reasons.

Hi,
Good work guys.
My contribution of $100 by paper check went out today.
Weeks turned into months, months into years passively looking out to get GC thinking that you being an honest individual, contributor to the industry and economy and society here, you will get it soon.
Then comes the bombshell of retrogression telling you to stick to your same job, employer and salary not for 2-3 years but something like 5-6 or more years, while away your most productive years of life waiting for GC uncertain and unable to get on with your normal life, unable to make major decisions of life.
A flicker of hope was raised by the senate bill in dec 2005 that the wait will come to an end. But just so little of political support, lot of apathy and ignorance, and determined opposition by well funded anti-immigration lobbies killed that hope.
Now one realises you are up against a solid, a very solid challenge. Only a focussed and organised action can overcome this challenge.
The momentum of individual activity during nov-dec 2005 was very good. It will be needed again. But that activity alone did not get us the results. What is needed here is an organised and focussed efforts by committed people backed by good funding. That's the way America works.
And this is what I see Immigration Voice doing. And it will need more members, money contribution and activism by the aspirants.
Hence guys, contribute and spread the word. dig out your address books, send the mails, call your friends, colleagues and request them to join the effort.

On the whole we, as a legal immigrant community, has good deal of work to do in a very short time in a do or die situation.

....this is a grass-roots organization and any highly skilled legal immigrant should be able to donate $25

But let's face reality for a moment - as several senior members routinely point out, inspite of our organization having several thousand "highly paid" members, the "donor" base is very limited. As Zen says in a truly Zen manner "we are where we are"...and we have to figure out where to go from here. Unquestionably, I am really thankful to our highly dedicated Core team for sacrificing their personal time and making all of the efforts that have led to substantial progress over the last few years for the immigration community. However,, that with a new government in place, we now have a truly unique window of opportunity to make some progress and the question before us is how do we maximize our potential to take advantage of this? The real beauty of my proposal is that we could leverage the enormous dedication of the core team and multiply it several fold, if we could build a strong donor base that provides us the funding required to engage effective lobbyists. Needless to say the more the funding, the stronger can be our lobbying.

However, what you are referring to is the merchanics of the process of sharing updates- there are several ways in which we could implement the update process so that information is only shared to a predefined "pool" and that "donors" are first vetted before being brought into the "pool", so to speak. The way IV has currently implemented this process, of course, is through the local chapters. However, their current process is subject to lack of consistency (depending very heavily on the availability of the local chapter coordinators) and more importantly, does not take advantage of the tool that really enables us to all come together i.e. the internet. It is a paradox that an organization founded on the net and is still subjecting itself to the constraints of "physical communication" via the local chapters. I thought they were taking a step in right direction with the creation of the "Donor Forum", however, for some reason, we still seem stuck in the previous mode of operation. We can find a middle ground here that would not compromise confidentiality or our goals - one alternative (certainly not the only one I am sure) is quite simply, email updates compiled by one person (for consistency and uniform direction) that go out a distribution group, where the "donors" on the distribution list, have been vetted by the local chapter coordinators. I know this takes work, but if the Core is looking for a person to pull together a Conference Call to compile this update and send it out, I would be glad to volunteer my services.
Still I've some open issues. If you look at the poll, there isnt a single person who voted NO. We should expect to see a healthy mix of Yes,No and Dont Care. But the way the poll has been put and partly the wording, partly the current IV environment, people are sceptical of putting their real thoughts publicly. This excercise is futile if you have minimal 'NO's --- hope you are getting my point here. The only thing you might end up with is x number of YES and hope to translate the YES into more dollar value for IV and there will be some YES who are already contributing monetarily.

In reality though, everyone who has viewed this thread (1563 views when I last checked - even if you assume each person has checked this thread at least 10 times, that's about 156 individuals out of whom only about 35 have voted so far!) and not bothered to vote is essentially voting "No"! However, again as you point out, I am not really looking for the "No"s since these people have clearly decided they don't want to part with their money at this stage (not ascribing any reasons or motives here - just stating the facts). Instead, my focus is on coalescing a group around those who voted "Yes" since they, like me, agree that they would contribute more if they received more regular updates of what is going on. Our organization just needs a little more "organization" (pun, intended :p) to make it more effective! Again, just reality but that is also the usual natural evolution of most organizations that start out as pure grassroots organizations.
I really do believe there are substantial number of folks out there who can be engaged more effectively in this process and I invite the Core Leadership team to put more thought in figuring out how to achieve this - I hope you take my suggestion constructively!

It is not a matter of our convenience. If you quit the sponsoring employer and he has no intention of hiring you again after your GC, then what is the sense in him retaining your 140 for no reason? It only adds complexity to some employers as dangling 140s are counted to evaluate their ability to pay. So even if it is not law, it makes sense for employers to revoke 140s of employees who quit them.
AC21 protects you from such a revoked 140. We have seen some cases where revoking the 140 - even after the 180 day mark - has resulted in 485 denial. This is a mistake from CIS and is easily fixed.
Expecting the previous employer to hold on to your 140 is not very different from expecting him to keep your you previous job open for you - just in case.

It's most interesting that Mexico EB3 moved past the 2001 Apr30/May01 barrier. So the theory that fired Java/HTML H1's from the dotcom era bring up the 245(i) does seem to hold water.

I really dont care what my company policy says because as I look at it, it should be my decision whether to work on EAD or continue on H1-B. If they switch my work authorization without my knowledge, then it will be a classic case for lawsuit. Moreoever the policy is not documented anywhere.
As long as you dont use your EAD, you can continue working on H1B.
In fact, if it is the same employer as your GC sponsor, you dont have to do anything.
The thing to remember is to extend your H1B if you do a H1B transfer so you dont have any issues at the time of transfer.
All this is assuming that your company policy can handle exceptions to the policy :)

Dude, these are not stocks where resistance and support play parts, it is USCIS/DoS. All they offer: resistance from with-in with no support to its customers. I am surprised you are still trying to find a pattern/curve. At best, it can be represented by a squiggly line my nephew draws..
